The band and Roth had gotten back together in June after an 11 year separation…Roth recorded a couple of songs for the groups greatest hits package, and then was given his walking papers…Roth was the second lead singer to depart the band this year…Sammy Hagar was booted in June. Roth faxes an open letter to the press saying his appearance on MTV with the band was a publicity stunt orchestrated by the band and that the other members had no intentions of letting him back in. Singer Don McLean is born. (1945)

Mike Rutherford, guitarist for Mike & the Mechanics and Genesis (1950)

Sting, bassist and vocalist for Police, is born. (1951)

Specialty Records releases “Bony Maronie” backed with “You Bug Me, Baby,” by Larry Williams. “Bony Maronie” peaks at #14 on the pop chart. (1957)

“Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, enters the R&B chart and peaks at #3. On the pop chart, it climbs to Number One and popularizes the beach sound of the Carolina beach resorts. (1960)

Vanguard Records releases the album “Volume Two” and the single “Banks of the Ohio” by 22 year old Joan Baez. She will go on to be one of the most popular and outspoken protest singers of the ’60s. (1961)

The Who make their U.S. TV debut on “Shindig!” performing “I Can’t Explain.” Also on the show are the Four Tops and Gerry & the Pacemakers. (1965)

Soul Singer Fontella Bass’ “Rescue Me” enters the Hot 100. It remains on the pop charts for thirteen weeks where it peaks at Number Four. (1965)

The McCoys’ “Hang On Sloopy” hits #1 on the singles chart. (1965)

All six members of the Grateful Dead are busted by California narcotics agents for possession of marijuana. It happens at the groups’ 710 Ashbury Street House in San Francisco. After six hours, they are released on bail. (1967)

Motown Records and its publishing affiliate, Jobete Music, file a $4 million suit against songwriters and producers Edward Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland, the team responsible for many of the company’s biggest hits. Motown claims the trio has not put out any new songs since late 1967 — a breach of contract. (1968)

After years of singing in other stars’ bands including Jeff Beck’s, Rod “the Mod” Stewart establishes himslef as a star in his own right. On this date both the single “Maggie May” and his “Every Picture Tells a Story” LP hit Number One. While maintaining his successful solo career, Stewart is also the lead singer for the Faces-something he’ll continue keep doing through 1976. (1971)

John Lennon’s “Imagine” LP enters the chart as does The Beach Boys’ “Surf’s Up” LP. (1971)

The best of the Bay area’s rock talent come together for a performance to benefit a “friend” named Badger. Promoter Bill Graham is ticked because Badger turns out to be a member of the Hell’s Angels who needs legal aid. Graham is well known to be no fan of the outlaw motorcycle gang. (1973)

After a bomb scare clears out Milwaukee’s Upton Theatre where Bruce Springsteen is performing he goes back to the Hotel Phister to wait before the gig’s rescheduled midnight commencement. Making use of the bar, the usually conservative Springsteen gets — in his own words — “a little loose” and proceeds to give a wild performance. The comment of a British writer along for the ride when, on the way back to the hall, Bruce rides on top of the car: “I have seen the future of rock & roll and he is on my windshield.” (1975)

John Belushi comes out during the second verse of Joe Cocker’s rendition of “Feeling Alright” on Saturday Night Live. Belushi performs his exaggeratedly spastic imitation of Cocker. The crowd goes nuts and Cocker, familiar with Belushi’s “tribute” to him, claims that since “my band likes it, I’m as happy as a pig in shit.” (1976)

Rod Stewart’s “Tonight’s The Night” is released. (1976)

After a month following what appeared to be an attempt to steal the body of Elvis Presley from Forest Hill Cemetary, both Presley’s and his grandmother’s bodies are moved to Graceland. (1977)

Gene Simmons bass player for KISS, receives a platinum record for his solo LP, one of four released concurrently by the members of KISS. Simmons’ charts the highest getting up to #22. (1977)

Tenor singer Leaveil Degree of the soul group the Whispers, starts serving a two-year prison term in Boron, California, for his part in a 1979 gem heist. At the same time, the groups self-titled album is in the soul Top Ten LPs chart. (1980)

Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” enters the rock albums chart at #24. Though the record, which consists mainly of solo acoustic songs, will receive virtually no radio play, it remains on the best-seller charts for several months. (1982)

The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah” enter the Hot 100 at #90. It eventually makes the pop Top Ten and the funk-dub remix, “Mustapha Dance” makes the disco singles Top Ten, helping the group’s latest album “Combat Rock” become it first golf and platinum LP. (1982)

At a WOMAD benefit concert in England, former Genesis members Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett join current members Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Phil Collins for a set. (1982)

Aerosmith’s “Rock In A Hard Place” album enters the chart. The LP was recorded without guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. (1982)

Rush’s “Signals” enters the LP chart. (1982)

John Cougar’s “Jack & Diane” hits #1 on the singles chart while .38 Special’s “You Keep Runnin’ Away” peaks at #38. (1982)

Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” tour ends at the L.A. Coliseum. (1985)

The Everly Brothers are awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. (1986)

At a press conference, the Maharishi, with the Beatles seated next to him, gives strong and sincere answers to the press’ sarcastic and sometime silly questions. The Beatles announce they have given up drugs as Paul McCartney explains, “It was an experience we went through. We don’t need it anymore. We’re finding different ways to get there.” (1967)

Apple Corps releases its first products: five singles including the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” backed by “Revolution.” It becomes the bands biggest hit. (1968)

The Beatles release “Matchbox/Slow Down.” (1964)

The members of the Beatles meet with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for the first time in London. (1967)

Patti Harrison convinces her husband George and the rest of the Beatles to attend a lecture at the Park Lane Hilton given by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They attend along with Mick Jagger and his girlfriend Marianne Faithfull. Brian Epstein is invited but declines. Afterwards, John Lennon compares the experience as “going somewhere without your trousers.” (1967)

A headline in Billboard reads, “Rock and Roll Ain’t Ready For The Ol’ Rockin’ Chair Yet.” The story says rock & roll was losing popularity a year ago, but the record buyers now like Elvis Presley, Fats Domino and Lloyd Price along with newcomers, the Drifters, Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. Phil Phillips’ “Sea Of Love” hits #2 on the pop charts. (1959)

Little Stevie Wonder is the first artist to make the Number One position on the pop single chart, the pop albums chart and the R&B singles chart all at one time. In fact, nobody had made the pop single and album charts at the same time. The music from “Wonder World” is the album, “The Twelve Year-Old-Genius” and the single, “Fingertips, Part Two.” (1963)

The Who’s drummer, Keith Moon, drives a Lincoln into the pool of a Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan. (1968)

lton John makes his first appearance in the U.S. at Los Angeles’ Troubador, kicking off a 17 day tour. (1970)

Emerson, Lake and Palmer make their world debut at Plymouth Guild Hall in Plymouth, England. (1970)

The Faces play what they claim is their last U.K. date. Faces bassist Tetsu Yamaychi has been denied a work permit by the Musicians Union, which has Rod Stewart calling the decision, "a disgrace." However, the group stays together and Stewart claims he’s devoting all his time to the group and his next solo LP will be his last. (1973)

The Allman Brothers’ "Ramblin’ Man" is released, and the album "Brothers and Sisters" enters the album charts. (1973)

Stevie Wonder’s "Innervisions" enters the album charts. It would go on to win the Grammy for Album Of The Year. (1973)

Elton John plays two sets on the first of three night at L. A.’s Troubadour to raise money for UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute. Over $150,000 is raised for the clinic. John’s dates at the Troubadour are special to him because five years ago on this date, he began a weeklong stint thee that helped establish his superstar status in the U.S. (1975)

Boston releases its self-titled album, which becomes the best-selling debut album ever. (1976)

Jackson Browne’s "Running on Empty" turns platinum. His fifth album is a cleverly constructed diary on the road that includes performances recorded on stage and even in hotel rooms. He garners two Top 20 hits, the title track and "Stay/The Load Out." (1978)

The Knack’s "My Sharona" hits #1 on the chart while Dire Straits’ "Lady Writer" peaks at #45. (1979)

Gary Numan releases "Cars." (1979)

Jazz leader, composer and arranger Stan Kenton dies following a long illness at Hollywood’s Midway. He did influence rock and roll music and it can be heard in the horn charts used by the band, Chicago. (1979)

Just nine days after being on "The Big Beat," Jerry Lee Lewis returns. He again closes with "Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On." By the end of the month it will top both the Country & Western and R&B charts. (1957)

Booker T. and the MG’s instrumental song, "Green Onions," is released on Stax Records. It will make it up to number three on the pop charts. (1962)


Diana Ross invites 350 guests to a Beverly Hills club to see the newest Motown act, The Jackson 5. (1969)

Elvis and Pricilla file for divorce. They had married in May of 1967. (1972)

After seeing KISS play at a New York hotel, producer Bill Aucion offers to become their manager and promises a record deal. (1973)

The Edgar Winter Group’s "Free Ride" is released. (1973)

Aerosmith’s "Toys In The Attic" LP goes gold. (1975)

The debut of Anglo-American pop-rock band, the Pretenders is certified platinum about three years after it’s released. The L.P. contained two hits, "Brass in Pocket" and "Kid." (1982)

Amada Grace Sudano is born to Donna Summer and her husband, Bruce Sudano. (1982)

Duran Duran’s lead singer Simon LeBon’s boat capsizes off the English coast during a race. He’s rescued by the Royal Navy after he spends 40 minutes trapped in an underwater air pocket. (1985)

Mel Taylor, drummer for the Ventures, dies of lung cancer in Tarzana. He was 62. (1996)

The remainder of the Monkees tour was apparently cancelled Monday (August 8 ). While no real official word has been issued, Davy’s web site lists no Monkees dates after the July 23 concert in Milwaukee.

Pollstar and at least one of the venues say dates in August and September were cancelled. And the Davy Jones Facebook page has a message annoucing the cancellation and asking that the band’s privacy be respected.

The ony reason reportedly given was the standard “unforeseen circumstances” and further speculation is useless.

The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is the site of the first annual Rock Music Award Show. The Don Kirshner produced broadcast on CBS proves to be an alternative to the Grammys. Those taking home awards: Bad Company, the Eagles, Roger Daltrey, Joan Baez and Stevie Wonder. (1975)

Blues legend Muddy Waters performs at a White House picnic for President Jimmy Carter. (1978)

Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” which is the theme song for the hit movie “Rocky III,” goes gold. (1982)

Singer Rick James pleads innocent to charges he imprisoned, tortured and sexually assaulted a woman in his California home. (1991)

Grateful Dead singer, guitarist and spiritual leader Jerry Garcia dies of a heart attack while undergoing drug rehabilitation. He was 53. (1995)

Billboard reports Decca Records dumped 25,000 copies of Ray Peterson’s “Tell Laura I Lover Her.” They felt the song, which recounts the last thoughts of a teenager dying from a car accident, is too tasteless and vulgar for the English sensibility. (1960)

The Rolling Stones have another riot at one of their concerts. This one is in the Hague, Netherlands. (1964)

Eric Burdon tells Billboard the origin of the Animals namesake. He explains it was the group’s followers which called them “The Animals” when they were known as the Alan Price Combo. Burdon explains, “(it) was probably an association with the kind of music that we play, earthy and gutty. It’s sort of an animal sound, and on stage we can be pretty wild.” Also it was on this date that the group’s tune “House of the Rising Sun” is released. (1964)


Thousands of Americans are denied entry into Canada for the Strawberry Fields Rock Festival in Mosport, Ontario. Officials denied the concert goers-to-be on the grounds that they “failed to produce adequate monies to support themselves.” 8,000 Americans made it there. (1970)

Singer Bessie Smith finally gets a marker for her grave in Philadelphia, 33 years after her death. Janis Joplin purchased the marker for the grave, stating that Smith was one of her influences. (1970)

CCR’s “Looking Out My Back Door” is released. (1970)

Eric Clapton receives a gold record for “461 Ocean Boulevard.” It’s his comeback album and contains his Number One version of “I Shot the Sheriff.” The album reaches the top of the charts. (1974)

The Rolling Stones end their U.S. tour before a crowd of 80,000 in Buffalo. (1975)

The Greater London Council orders a halt to the plans of American heavy metal, punk-destructo band the Plasmatics to blow up a car onstage tonight. It’s at the Hammersmith Odeon conters, the groups first performance in the U.K. (1980)

The Pretenders begin their second U.S. tour. It’s an eleven week stint that begins in Fort Pierce, Florida. The tour is in support of their new album, “Pretenders II.” (1981)

Jefferson Starship singer Mickey Thompson marries Sara Kendrick in San Francisco. (1982)

David Crosby is released from prison after serving a sentence for drug and weapons possession. (1986)

U2′s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” hits #1 on the Billboard chart. (1987)

Metallica singer James Hetfield was injured by a stage explosion at a concert in Montreal. At the same show, Guns ‘n’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose lost his voice and cut short their set. Fans weren’t too pleased and rioted. (1992)

The original beach movie, “Beach Party”, debuts. The film stars Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Music is provided by Dick Dale & the Del Tones. (1963)

The Turtles’ remake of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe” is released. (1965)

The Dave Clark 5 lead singer Mike Smith, breaks two ribs when he is pulled off the stage by overzealous fans during a show in Chicago. (1965)

Frank Zappa’s Mother of Invention record “Just Another Band from L.A.” at U.C.L.A. It’s the last Zappa album to incldue former Turtles Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. The two leave to record on their own as Flo and Eddie. (1971)

The Bee Gees attain their first of seven Number One records in America. It’s “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” From here, the group turns to Barry Gibb’s falsetto and a disco beat which will jump start their careers. (1971)

Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band and actresss Faye Dunaway are married in a Beverly Hills courtroom. (1974)

One of the successes of the year is Rickie Lee Jones. Her debut album goes platinum and kicks out a Top Five hit, “Chuck E’s in Love.” (1979)

At a Marshall Tucker Band show in Long Beach, CA, a fan steals a car and drives it through two banks of metal exit doors and one concrete wall. (1979)

An L.A. judge throws out a lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne. The lawsuit had been filed by the parents of a teenager who committed suicide while listening to Ozzy’s song, “Suicide Solution.” (1987)

Charges of assault and property damage are filed against Guns ‘n’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose in connection with a riot during a show in St. Louis. (1991)
